Today's task was a difficult one but it was good to see so many of you giving it a go and coming up with some good information. It is surprising how much information can be communicated through what a film shows an audience. Remember that nothing appears in a film by mistake - if it is meant to be there it must be there for a reason! HOME LEARNING Today you spent the time applying the knowledge gained on Friday about the use of sound in film. You each worked on your own version of this Prezi and should have a completed copy saved. I hope that the language is starting to make sense to you and that you are becoming increasingly comfortable at using it to describe what is going on with sound within moving image texts. HOME LEARNING Today we explored how we could turn our notes into a well structured response to the first question on the media exam. Look below for the resources that we used and a reminder of the structure, the sentence starters and the question. Don't forget to look at the Home Learning at the bottom.
HOME LEARNING Cover work for 10th December 2013Today I am not in school I am afraid but you are going to look at the work of Roland Barthes and how he tries to explain how stories work and what makes them successful. Enigma Codes and Action Codes are the most important to be able to us and talk about as these form the basis of many narratives. You will also understand the difference between story and plot and be able to use the terms story, plot and narrative with increasing confidence and accuracy. In the task ignore the reference to the Wanted clip and just use the films that we have previously studied - you may use the notes that you have on them from earlier theorists. Remember to look at your Home Learning to ensure that you understand the theory that we have covered.
Today we looked at applying the narrative theories that we have ben studying to a narrative by using a tension graph to plot the major events and the effect that it has on an audience. Remember that spikes in the graph can often be attributed to key moments in Todorov's Theory of Equilibrium such as the inciting incident or the resolution. Others may coincide with key aspects of Binary Oppositions or Propp's theory of Character Functions. HOME LEARNING Cover Work For 27th November 2013I am not in lesson today but the tasks are contained in the presentation above. Make sure that you are completing all tasks as fully as possible. Use the notes from each of these tasks to create a presentation in Keynote outlining Levis-Strauss' Theory of Binary Oppositions and how they are created. SLIDE 1 - What are the key characteristics of the ARCHETYPAL hero? Label an image or images of Action/Adventure heroes. SLIDE 2 - What are the key characteristics of the ARCHETYPAL villain? Label an image or images of Action/Adventure villains. EXTENSION: Add a slide to the end of the presentation. SLIDE 3 - How do these characters create Binary Oppositions within a narrative? Label up still images from the movie or film posters to demonstrate. SLIDE 4 - To what extent do you feel that Binary Oppositions help a narrative be successful? Answer this in as much detail as possible using evidence to support your ideas.
HOME LEARNING With your analysis nearing completion you are will be moving on to creating your CD artwork soon. You need to consider how you are going to represent your artist on your cover. This is the audience's first impression of the artist and they will make assumptions about the style of music and content based on this. If Ms Spears here had used this image on the cover of her Debut album, would she have had the success she has over her career so far? Doubtful. What style of music does this edited (very quickly edited!) version suggest? What evidence is there here for that? These are the kind of questions that you must consider as you begin deciding on styles and options for your CD artwork. To create a thoroughly thoughtful representation you will need to draw upon all of your knowledge and understanding of representation that you have been displaying throughout your analysis. All decisions need to be accounted for; colour schemes considered using Semiology, choise of clothing and setting is extremely important, what facial expression should your artist be performing. Think analytically about your artwork, demonstrate your understanding in a well thought out piece of coursework.Over half term you will be set some pre-production tasks to get you ready to create the product when we come back. Keep your eyes on your blog! Today we analysed some film posters using our new knowledge of semiology (the study of signs). Some good ideas were offered and it seems that the class are getting to grips with these new theories. As your coursework production will be generating a CD cover for an artist of your invention, we need to apply these theories to CD cover artwork. Below are three CD covers, take time to analyse them and identify the semiology used to compose the images, you should now be able to identify all three types of sign with good reasoning. For extra analysis you could now include thoughts on representation Write your responses in a word document or powerpoint and submit digitally through the 'ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION' area on the home page. This is due in by Monday 17th September.
